Candle Care & Safety Guide
To get the most from your Thirty One Candle β beautiful scent, a clean burn, and the longest possible burn time β please follow the care and safety guidance below.
π―οΈ First Burn
The first burn sets the "memory" of your candle and is the most important burn you'll do.
- Allow the wax to melt all the way to the edge of the jar on the first burn β this can take 2β4 hours depending on vessel size.
- Never extinguish early on the first burn. Stopping too soon can cause tunnelling, where the wax sinks in the centre and the edges never melt.
- A full melt pool ensures an even, consistent burn and maximum scent throw throughout the candle's life.
βοΈ Wick Trimming
Trimming your wick before every burn keeps your candle performing at its best.
- Trim the wick to 5 mm before each burn (approximately ΒΌ inch).
- A properly trimmed wick produces a steady, moderate flame with minimal soot or smoke.
- If you notice the flame flickering excessively or producing black smoke, extinguish the candle safely, allow it to cool completely, then trim the wick before relighting.
- Remove any wick trimmings or debris from the wax pool before burning.
β±οΈ Burn Time Limits
- Do not burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time.
- After 4 hours, extinguish the flame, allow the wax to harden completely, trim the wick, and then relight.
- Burning for longer than recommended can cause the wick to shift, the vessel to overheat, and the scent to diminish more quickly.
- Stop burning when approximately 10 mm of wax remains at the bottom of the jar β burning below this level can cause the vessel to become very hot.
π Safe Placement
- Always place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from the edge of tables or shelves.
- Keep away from draughts, open windows, air vents, and fans β moving air can cause uneven burning and increase the risk of the flame coming into contact with nearby objects.
- Never place a burning candle near curtains, paper, books, bedding, clothing, or any flammable material.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended or in an unoccupied room.
- Do not burn on or near anything that can catch fire.
πΆ Children & Pets
- Keep lit candles out of reach of children and pets at all times.
- Do not allow children or pets to handle candles, matches, or lighters.
- Never leave a burning candle in a room where children or pets are unsupervised.
- Ensure candles are placed where they cannot be knocked over.
π¦ Storage
- Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strong light sources, which can cause fading and affect the wax.
- Keep the lid on (where supplied) when not in use to protect the wax surface and preserve the scent.
- Avoid storing candles near heat sources such as radiators, ovens, or sunny windowsills β this can cause the wax to soften or sweat.
- Candles stored correctly and used as directed should maintain their quality for up to 12 months.
π₯ Extinguishing Your Candle
- Use a candle snuffer or dip the wick into the wax pool and straighten it immediately β this avoids smoke and keeps the wick centred.
- Do not extinguish by blowing directly if avoidable, as this can spread wax or cause smoke to linger.
- Never use water to extinguish a candle.
- Ensure the candle is fully extinguished and the wax has hardened before leaving the room.
